07/01/02 Character
Counts
This past week we saw Worldcom as another example of why character counts.
It is important to have leaders who conduct their business and their lives
with integrity.
For years, we have allowed ourselves to accept that it is OK to lie, cheat and
steal if you are doing it with good intentions. By rationalizing things,
we have somehow eliminated there are consequences to doing wrong. This
type of thinking has allowed people with no sense of right and wrong to run our
business's and all forms of government.
I think we are seeing more of this because most of us do nothing to stop them.
We have become a very forgiving society that does not believe in accountability
for doing wrong. This thinking has allowed a new breed of greedy and
unscrupulous bunch of thief's. It must stop because like a ripple effect
it touches all of us in one way or another. |
Sharon,
How can we correspond to Mary Lou's letter? It was great! I
wish I could have told her the firm Kirk worked for was asked by a young
man who ran against an incumbent congressman if the firm would consider
just allowing him a leave of absence while he ran for office. His
request was denied. It is interesting how different rules apply for different
people. Elaine |
Political correctness is killing our society. We need to go back to old
fashion values.
People should get ahead because they are the most qualified not because of their
race, sex or religion. As a Mexican, I am offended that just because at
one time people were discriminated we have to make it up by giving positions of
influence to unqualified people.
Two cases in point are our City Manager Ted Benavides and Police Chief Terrell
Bolton. These two people have cost our city millions of dollars. Yet,
nothing is done to remove them. I shudder to think that Ron Kirk may
become our next U. S. Senator because Texas has not had an African American
senator.
Ron Kirk is responsible for the mess Dallas is in. He may do the same for
the entire state. The same thing goes for Tony Sanchez. I believe in
electing people who work for all their constituents not just those of
"their" party.
Our city is in a crisis because of the leadership we have had. We have a
city manager that has mismanaged our taxes and is looking for ways of making up
for his inability to do a good job. We have a police chief who has done
little if nothing to make his men proud of working under "his watch".
From the start, he has been in the middle of lawsuits. We just had a mayor
who accepted money from his law firm even though he did little work and now he
wants to be our next U.S. Senator. We have several incompetent judges who
are costing us the taxpayers money by not doing their job.
Are you happy living in a city that has this type of leadership? Speaking
for myself I want these people who have shown us that they are irresponsible and
not qualified to do the jobs they now have to look for other jobs. They
are causing many citizens to move out of Dallas because they can no longer
afford paying their taxes. Dallas deserves better.
I close by reminding each one of you that it is up to ALL of us to do our part
to turn things around. Each one of us does this by not looking the other
way when we see or hear something that is not right.
PLEASE inform yourselves about the people who you vote for. Don't allow
the love of a party to govern your decisions. We must all demand nothing
but the best of those that head our companies, cities, states, and federal
government. If we do not we will reap the consequences. Plus our
enemies are watching to see if we continue to be lazy or more proactive.
We are adults and we must stop acting like children who has someone taking care
of us.
The time is NOW to show the substance that has made our country great and that
we are people of principle and backbone. We owe it to our children's
future.
Mary Lou
