02/06/02   Kirk's Large White Shadow is raining on Dunning's Campaign

You have 7 interesting postings to read in addition to my comments (see links at left), so this will be short and sweet.

Since she got on the Ron Kirk bandwagon, Carol Reed has cut her Republican ties (we cut her loose) and has been hired to do all the ODB's Big Ticket campaigns of the past several years.  She did not do those campaigns alone -- she had help from Rob Allyn.  They are in separate camps in this mayoral race.  From all the gaffes out of
Tom Dunning's campaign, it is clear Rob Allyn was the brains in their former alliance.  In her first major campaign without Allyn's assistance, she has had a series of screw ups, from pirated TV ads to the endorsement/office titles fiasco.

This latest flap with her identifying 5 Dunning endorsers with their official titles just keeps getting funnier by the day.  According to:

Dunning camp's turn: Ethics charge lodged against Miller by DAVE MICHAELS  (DMN 2/6/02)

The rancorous Dallas mayoral race produced another complaint of candidate misbehavior Tuesday, with the Dunning campaign charging that Laura Miller inappropriately used her title in a political mailing last year.

The complaint from Tom Dunning's campaign was a rejoinder to one filed Monday with the city's Ethics Commission by a Miller supporter.  .  .  .

In the ad criticized by the Dunning forces, Ms. Miller is identified as a "Dallas City Councilwoman" in a mailer promoting council pay.
Former Mayor Ron Kirk is also identified by his title in that mailing, which was prepared last year by Rob Allyn, who is now Ms. Miller's consultant.

"It's hypocritical to be attacking her former colleagues when it appears that she has done the same thing," Mr. Dunning said Tuesday.

Ms. Miller and Mr. Allyn defended the use of Ms. Miller's title, arguing that it was used to endorse a political issue and not a candidate.  Mr. Allyn said past council members and mayors have used their titles to endorse bond packages, a practice that has not been challenged.  "If that is not appropriate, it would certainly be news to me and lots of other council members who have gotten involved in these issues," Ms. Miller said.

Mr. Allyn said the council pay referendum was more like a bond campaign than a political race. He called it a "city issue."

The city's ethics code prohibits office holders from using their titles when endorsing "a candidate, political party or political committee." The Committee for Fair Council Pay, the group that paid for the mailing in question, filed documents with the city in March that established it as a political action committee.

"The code clearly states it applies to candidates and political action committees, and that was a political action committee," Mr. Dunning said.

Mr. Allyn said that Carol Reed, Mr. Dunning's chief campaign consultant, directed the Committee for Fair Council Pay. Ms. Reed dictated the language of the mailings, including the use of Ms. Miller's and Mr. Kirk's titles, Mr. Allyn said.  "She approves all the copy, every word of it," he said.

Bumbling Boob:

Where can I get a job like Carol Reed's?  Wow, it would be nice to have a
six figure income for being a bumbling boob.

Linda

Rob Allyn would certainly know about that.  I just happen to have some interesting mailers that were produced by Carol Reed and Rob Allyn.

On a mailer "
Plans are being drawn To Build A Better Dallas" (pro-arena propaganda), which lists Chairman Mayor Ron Kirk, the political disclaimer says:

Paid for by the Yes! For Dallas Committee.  John Carona, Treasurer, 3232 McKinney Avenue, Suite 855, Dallas, Texas  75204  (214)871-3029 FAX (214) 871-3061

On a Dallas 2012 mailer "They Stay.  They Play.  They're The Only Ones Who Pay.  Okay?", which has A Message from Mayor Ron Kirk, the political disclaimer says:

Paid for by the Yes! For Proposition 2012  Ron Steinhart, Treasurer, 3232 McKinney Avenue, Suite 855, Dallas, Texas  75204

On the "When you really know the candidates, Tom Dunning is the only choice." mailer (where 5 current council members' names and office titles appear as endorsing him), the political disclaimer says:

Paid for by Tom Dunning for Mayor, Carole Young, Treasurer, 3232 McKinney Avenue, Suite 855, Dallas, Texas  75204

If I had more time, I could probably find the Trinity Bond-doogle mailer with Mayor Ron Kirk and other council members names on it, as well as a political disclaimer that had something in common with the above three disclaimers.  (Coming up tonight)

THEY ARE ALL FROM CAROL REED.

So, how come
Tom Dunning's campaign failed to file a complaint against Ron Kirk for lending his name to the same mailer where Miller's endorsement and title appear?  Laura Miller and Ron Kirk were not endorsing a "POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE she might have done something wrong, but that's not what happened.  So, is Tom Dunning's campaign going to file a complaint against Senatorial Candidate Ron Kirk or any other council member's name who appeared on the pro-council pay mailer?

Or is he just going to pick on the woman?

This is more evidence that Tom Dunning has been assimilated by the Borg.  He takes no responsibility for anything that his "campaign" has done to date.  He speaks (and apparently thinks) in the "we" position (not the same as "wee wee").  When his campaign violated the Ethics Code by using council members' titles, he called it a dirty trick by the Miller campaign.  Very strange reasoning, but very BORG.

Miller backer lodges ethics charge against Dunning by COLLEEN McCAIN NELSON (DMN 2/5/02)

A complaint filed Monday with the city of Dallas charges that mayoral candidate Tom Dunning's latest mailing violates the city's ethics code by including council members' titles with their endorsements.

The city's ethics code specifies that officials can lend their names to another candidate's campaign, but they cannot mention their offices in connection with a political endorsement. Mr. Dunning's mailing identifies Mary Poss as acting mayor and James Fantroy, Lois Finkelman, Veletta Forsythe Lill and Alan Walne as council members who support Mr. Dunning.

"The mailing misleads voters into believing the city supports Tom Dunning," said Allen Gwinn, who supports candidate Laura Miller and submitted the complaint.

Carol Reed, Mr. Dunning's chief consultant, said she was not aware of the rule.  "It was a simple mistake," she said. "We won't be using their titles again." .  .  .

Mr. Dunning and his supporters said his campaign's lapse should not become a campaign issue.

"It's a shame that some people are looking for a bogeyman behind every door, rather than looking at important issues," Ms. Poss said.  .  .  .

How much do you want to bet that Con Jerk is not too pleased with his Large White Shadow or his anointed successor pulling him into their mess?

The common denominatrix in all of these offending mailers is Ron Kirk's Large White Shadow, CAROL REED.

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
