12/08/03 Deciphering The Dallas
Managed News
DallasArena.com recently wrote about how the DMN
manages what news they think we need in
Dangerously Managed News.
Several DallasArena.com readers have started tracking how the DMN decides when
to mention a suspect's ethnicity. With the current rash of stories, a
pattern has been determined. Basically, if the DMN doesn't
describe the suspect as White, then the assailant is Black or Hispanic.
Here are a couple:

JC:
I wrote DMN Chris
Siron as I was told he is in charge of such matters.
He
has written me back on several occasions with nonsensical thoughts on why
they don't provide the race of the suspect.
I await
his response to my inquiry regarding the hypocrisy of the Gunman wounds
man story.
I
think what will be more important is that the DMN doesn't believe we are
just individuals.
We all know the power that is registered
when marching as one and that fact could move the DMN to act more
responsible.

Dylan Cave to DMN:
Re: Greenville Ave. shooting
Greetings, Mr. Grabell
I noticed in your article, you
identified the race of the perpetrator
of the crime.
Is the News putting an end to the recent practice of not
publishing the race of criminals, or was it safe this time because
the suspect is white?
You have a right to
report "Just the facts ma'am", and stand
behind the shield of journalism. However, it would
be very unfortunate for a double
standard to develop within the News, of publishing when White,
and cutting out when "other". |
|
Dylan Cave to DMN:
This kind of treatment can easily appear to be uneven to
your readership.
The News would be better served by
having a policy of either never
publishing race, or always publishing it.
Or you can cover yourself by
stating "According to police, the suspect may be a _____ male in his 30's".
The incident with the two women on
Lower Greenville, was not a vague
description. They were face to face with two
black men and a gun.
