04/17/03  What to do?

Mike Perry knows what he wants done with city employees who violate the City Charter:

All city employees should be "herded up" and explained the rules for participating in local politics and sign a statement acknowledging they understand the rules and consequences if they violate the City Charter provisions governing city employees' participation in local political elections.  This way, when an employee violates the rules, there is no question they willfully violated the law and would be terminated immediately.

Bumper stickers ignite latest City Hall flap
04/18/2003 By CHRIS HEINBAUGH / WFAA-TV
Down in the Dallas City Hall parking garage, it's clear whom some city workers want for the next mayor - bumper stickers tell the story.
Most feel it's a simple matter of free speech. However, officials with the City Auditor's office started taking pictures of the cars for an investigation.
The investigation doesn't sit well with City Council member James Fantroy.
. . .  He fired off a memo to City Auditor Thomas Taylor demanding answers.
. . .  Fantroy thinks Mayor Laura Miller is pulling the strings.
. . .  some city workers have been actively supporting Miller's chief opponent Mary Poss. Fantroy thinks Miller is using the auditor to shut them up.
. . .  Taylor told News 8 the mayor had nothing to do with it. He said it started with an anonymous tip, and that he is required to investigate any case where the abuse of city resources is suspected.
. . .  "The Auditor's office is being used for someone's personal hit team to intimidate city employees," Fantroy said.
. . .  Whether these signs qualify as bumper stickers is not clear...and probably won't be until the race is long over.

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
