01/27/03   Is Mary for Mayor only a Nightmare and goes away when we wake up? 

In an East Dallas neighborhood near White Rock Lake, there's a little critter who scarfs cat food when opportunity knocks.  The residents have taken to calling the little varmint "Mary POSSum".

When you read the stuff from the Mary for Mayor campaign, it's hard to believe their audacity.  Tell a lie often and loud, and you come to believe it yourself.  

Mary POSSum has been the champion at doling out tax abatements to out of town companies and local Robber Baron Millionaires.  Considering the city's current financial dilemma as compared to when Poss went on the council almost 8 years ago,  it is amazing she would claim to be some kind of fiscal watchdog.

Laura Miller has been on the council less than half that time, both as a council member and as Mayor.  Miller was not part of the clique that was completely controlled by That Former Mayor, but Mary POSSum was his right hand gal, even though Don Hill was his true first assistant.  

With the exception that she will not have 2/3rds of Dunning's former supporters (just his hired hacks), the Mary for Mayor campaign looks a Tom Dunning campaign Part II.   MPT Poss and Tom Dunning are about the same size, but Mary POSSum does not have Ron Kirk's Large White Shadow on her team as yet.  

Tom Dunning had a very active, hi-tech campaign website.  When have you ever seen a campaign website that did not have the candidate's picture on the home page?  MaryforMayor.org looks like this:

Bland and very white -- sort of like Mary Poss.

For awhile, I subscribed to the weekly publication, The White Rocker, but dropped my subscription because they frequently let Mary POSSum run long articles under a 20 year old picture of someone we have never seen.  Mary POSSum ran the same picture on her old web site (MaryPoss.org) which now morphs to MaryforMayor.org.  Someone must have convinced her to let us get used to the way she really looks, so we are not so shocked when we see the real Mary POSSum.  

On many occasions, DallasArena.com has posted articles from The White Rocker  furnished by Anthony Jones.  Now that Jones is writing campaign copy for Mary POSSum, that practice will not be continued.  

The following article appeared in the 1/23/03 edition of The White Rocker. 

	Where's the political disclaimer on this pseudo-news article?
	Other than That Former Mayor and the City MisManager Ted Benavides, Mary Poss is the most responsible for the mess at City Hall.     Mary Poss and John Loza both blocked any investigation into Chief Terell Bolton's involvement in the Caligula Rizos/Lipscomb bribe deal.
	Poss was acting mayor for a few months after That Former Mayor resigned until Laura Miller was sworn in as our elected mayor.  Mary POSSum was so busy trying to defeat Miller that nothing got accomplished at all while she was acting mayor.
	This council works together fairly well with the exception of the daily obstructive actions of Mary Poss.  Mayor Miller lets the council debate issues rather than stifle discussion.    When decisions are made on a split vote, you know there is real thought going into the vote vs. That Former Mayor pulling his council puppets' strings.
	What accomplishments?  Like many on the council, Mary POSSum has been dedicated to serving herself and her benefactors at the expense of the people of Dallas.   She solved her District 9's sex club problem, by moving LaBare to the most neglected district in the city, District 6 with the acquiescence of the District 6 council representative.
	Mary POSSum was almost not elected to the third term.  Had Veletta Lill not changed her mind a couple of times, it would have been Mayor Pro Tem Lill.     This is proof Mary POSSum is nuts. When she was acting mayor, there were not "all 15 of us" to have any kind of relationship.  That Former Mayor and Laura Miller were not there.  15-2 = 13.  At least it does in real life,but in Mary POSSum's world, who knows?
	This might put her at odds with the African-American and Hispanic council members who are pushing for the $600+ million bond package.  Mayor Miller has been trying to get the council to hold to the lower bond package.      Mary POSSum plans to win with support of her African-American allies.  Wasn't that Tom Dunning's strategy, too?
	This is amazing.  Mary POSSum has supported every tax abatement to come down the pike.  What does she think happens when she takes millions out of potential property tax revenue when new development increases demand for police and fire protection and other city costs?      It is "unconscionable" for her to take money out of taxpayers' pockets and give it to her rich Robber Baron friends.
	POSSum never proposed anything during the budget process.  She claimed to have a complicated plan, but never submitted it.   There is a fancy new Police Headquarters to be furnished.   Does training and travel include council members?  POSSum and some other council crooks spend a lot of time out of town at our expense.     POSSum's suggestions are not $8 million in cuts -- closer to $800,000.     If she did "offer any solutions", how come no reporters made note of them?  If she did "offer any solutions", how come no one who sat in meetings with Mary POSSum confirms her claims?
	Those of us who live in the real world know the word "inflation".  That Former Mayor, the City MisManager and Mary POSSum did not control expenses.  They just kept drawing off the surplus and pretending to find needed funds to cover budget shortfalls.
	There will be a tax increase in the next fiscal year no matter who is mayor because we have  a shortfall of sales tax revenue brought on by the loss of convention business brought on by the arena sales taxes that have increased the cost of attending conventions in Dallas.  Mary POSSum supported the arena sales tax.  Mary POSSum supported the additional tax abatements for Palladium.
