10/22/04 USE OF DEADLY FORCE
 |
|
Long standing law enforcement tests, demonstrations and
training films have PROVED that in situations where a perpetrator points a
weapon at an officer, the officer MUST respond first with force or deadly
force. |
This action assumes that the officer does not have adequate protective cover
already in place.
One CANNOT WAIT until the perpetrator decides whether or not
he or she is going to fire at the officer.
Human response times and even common sense demonstrate that an officer's
decision to shoot MUST be made prior to his opposition acting first.
A holstered law enforcement weapon during such a confrontation is
USELESS.
It is not clear, pending further enforcement testing, if a TASER (with one shot
available), would suffice to save an officer's life in such life or death
situations.
My initial thoughts on the TASER being the all-conditions savior for
an officer in JEOPARDY would draw a NO vote until
satisfactory design modifications materialize.
