07/22/04 Thanks for your support for the Blue.
Thanks for the vote of support for the 7 officers whose
careers are on hold because they were on the scene in the Pedro
Fernandez death-in-custody call. I guess due process is just for
criminals and not for police officers.
I don't want to comment on the call or the investigation, but I am confident the Grand Jury will render a "No-Bill" verdict for the officers involved. I will say this: The new policy is killing officers who are involved. Many officers work 10-30 hours of overtime in a single pay period. That translates to roughly $300-$900 in extra pay every two weeks, or about $1500 extra every month. There isn't any kind of fund or insurance policy for this kind of change in income. Police officers would not need the overtime income if the "pay raises" the City has claimed to give police and fire weren't mere window dressing. Most officers make less money now than two years ago. Enough about the money. The point is: this policy is a punishment, any way you slice it. Officers are being punished without due process and denied the same liberties and opportunities to earn needed overtime income given to all officers on this department. The Chief has said publicly that he has apologized for this policy. Apologized to whom? |
