06/14/04 Curious about Personal Scam
Licenses at Texas Stadium
Why is nobody talking about the money to be
gotten from the sales of Personal Scam Licenses.
Until the DMN mentioned that
the PSL's were due to expire in 2008 at Texas Stadium, that was the first I'd
heard of them.
Right after that, in a letter to the
DMN Editor and an
article on DallasArena.com, Darrell Jordan
and Richard Knight mention how much can be gotten from
the *future* sales of PSL's emerges.
What I'm not clear on is just how many people would pony up 10k for something 5
or more years away. That seems to be a sticking point in my
mind.
From the other perspective, it is entirely possible that JJ is looking for the
income from those to finance his end of things. From
what little I gathered, JJ can get
$150 million from the NFL and expected
to get $425 million from his
cronies in Dallas county (who apparently have disappointed
him). Had his plan worked, that leaves
about $50 million or so,
which he could
cover easily just on ad revenues.
He's not really expecting any of this to come out of
his pocket and looking to keep the loot from the PSL's.
That's been the MO for quite a few teams these days. When
the PSL strategy was
first "offered", it was for use in constructing or
renovating a stadium. It
appears that's not the case anymore.
See the Eagles for more on that. They just started tacking on PSL's,
and their stadium is already built.
I was under the mistaken impression that the PSL was a "license" for life, at
least the life of the team and/or stadium. It
appears there's a shelf life on these puppies and that they can be "reissued"
again.
I still don't know how long the Cowflops would be committed to staying at the
UnFair park site or what "escape" clauses are expected.
All I see is a scam with the license money as ransom for the next round of price
hikes on tickets.
As a taxpayer who may get
nailed for the lion's share of the
Jonestown Stadium's cost, I can only shake my head.
If they're ticked off now, wait until
Dallas taxpayers find out
that the NFL will be a pay for view item in the next 10 years or so.
You want to watch the JJ's Boyz play 5 years from now?
That'll be 6.95 plus tax, please.
The DMN also wants money for
their online coverage of the Cowflops to the tune of 60 bucks a year.
You can get the same stories free from the FW
Star Telegram
for free, so I'm not sure how that's going over.
You have to question the integrity of a paper with a financial stake on
the fate of the Cowflops.
