02/04/04  Councilman Salazar sides with his constituents in NW Dallas.

In light of the community's outrage at City Hall's lack of concern for our welfare in Northwest Dallas, it was quite a pleasant shock to receive the following e-mail from District 6 City Councilman :

Dear Sharon:

This is to inform you that I have reviewed the various sites and am opposed to the Harry Hines site.

Thank you for your concern and I will need your input when the city looks for other sites.

Sincerely,

Steve Salazar
Councilmember - District 6

To say this is good news would be a major understatement.

There is an ever increasing sense of helplessness among Dallas residents who don't live in gated communities that they may not be able to live in this city much longer, particularly in NW Dallas because of the crime in the area.  We hear the Mayor and others giving lip service to reducing crime, but each week the crime reports our various crime watch groups share with each other are getting longer.     Citizen D:
DallasArena.com has it right with "T
he Mayor had time for vagrants and their keepers, but no time for taxpayers."

The Mayor had a meeting in City Hall for the homeless and their advocates that was well attended and staffed.  She has to be smart enough to know with an issue this hot, she could not expect to sneak it past the citizens!
How stupid are we supposed to be?  If the Mayor had just been open and up front, this issue would not seem to be as awful as it is now.
   H
eaven knows, it's AWFUL!

When you have several hundred people trek downtown to City Hall on a week night only to have 3 of 15 council members there to hear our concern, it is pretty disheartening.  That's why having Councilman Salazar take a moment to let us know he's with us is so appreciated.

Councilman Salazar:

As president of the Walnut Hill Homeowners Association, which consists of approximately 1,100 homes and thousands of residents and voters, I applaud your decision.  Though the boundaries of our association fall within Councilman Rasansky's district, we have carefully watched the developments of the proposed homeless facility on Harry Hines because it is close enough to us to have an adverse effect on our property values and personal safety should it be built.

I could not be at the meeting last night but one of our other officers, Joyce Benoit, did attend and voiced our strong opposition to the proposed Harry Hines location (in fact, she was quoted in the article appearing in today's DMN Metro section).

As I mentioned in a note to another area leader, we have been shocked that this location is even still being considered.  Certainly the residents of the area don't want it there.  Most homeless advocates don't want it there.  City staff doesn't want it there. The homeless themselves don't want it there.  So why continue looking at this site?

We will certainly "have your back" on this issue, and will be out in full force on the 25th!

Regards,

Ross Coulter, President
Walnut Hill Homeowners Association

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
