01/01/04  Downtown Parks

As an idea, I would like to see more green space downtown.  As a longtime resident of Dallas, however, I know the city does not have enough money to take care of our existing parks.

During the last bond election, I believe a number approaching $2 billion was tossed around as the amount needed to restore our parks to the condition they were in 1985.

If we need $2 billion to fix existing parks, why is anyone thinking about adding more parks?

JC:

Mr. Aten is more than correct.
In fact, I will go him one better.

Why not stop the non-caring, non-efficient government from using any taxpayer money for parks.  Let the people who directly are affected by the park can control the maintenance and use of the facilities.  They can raise money with events at the park.

Where will the money come from?

Will Belo pay to maintain these parks?

I have recently gotten involved with the Friends of Oak Cliff Parks.  We are trying to restore 4 parks in Oak Cliff our city government has  neglected for decades.

Before we add more parks anywhere, I suggest the city council fix our existing parks.

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
