01/26/05  Our elected officials at City Hall just don't care.

It is truly a shame where we've reached the point in Dallas at which the city can't get a hold of crime in a given area.  My heart goes out to Ms. Townsel and other Oak Cliff residents.  I grew up in areas like that.  I knew how to drop and roll to avoid gunfire before I hit kindergarten.

The things I read in Ms. Townsel's article convince me the City has given up on certain parts of Dallas

As I drove through South Dallas the last two nights, I see the same type of blatant disregard for the law that occurs in North Oak Cliff.  For example, open air drug markets in two places ONE BLOCK from the city councilperson's house -- ON THE SAME STREET.  Leo Chaney, are you listening?.  Prostitutes milling about and conducting business in front of city-owned property.  Druggies and drunks loitering and staggering about as they smoked and shot up their drug of choice.  And this was at 7PM!

Did Mary Suhm really need an extra $50,000+?  That would've bought another officer or two for an entire year. Or maybe another code-enforcement person.

There was a serious accident on Martin Luther King near I-45 last Monday afternoon.  I kid you not, there was glass, metal and debris across the entire East side of the street.  Three feet wide, two lanes across.  The cops just left it.  I hate to think what would happen to any kid or elderly person who might fall into that mess.  I had to call 911 just to have it cleaned up.

No one cares.

I can go to my shiny new Neighborhood Wal-Mart at Hall & Central (75) any time of night and feel safe.  Two miles away in each direction, my fellow Dallasites are living in hell. This should not be.  I know about lying on the floor on New Years Eve with my family, hoping nobody catches a stray bullet -- sleeping in bathtubs hoping you won't catch the ricochet of some moron firing his machine gun into the air -- and worse.

Why is this still accepted?

We can have Tipping Points, committees, probes and forums until the cows come home.  Until somebody downtown DOES something about it, it doesn't mean anything.

A message to the Mayor, the Chief of Police, and all of you council people:

Enough with the press conferences - get in the streets and do something.  All of you press hounds can get your publicity that way.

Our elected officials just don't care. Plain and simple. I would love to be proved wrong, but I doubt I'll live to see it.

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
