07/04/06  Best Glass of Wine!

Saw several soldiers from Airborne waiting for the plane to LAX. Three of them were in front of me at the check-in.  While we were standing there, an enormous bug - probably a roach - crawled out of one of their  boots. This amused everyone greatly as one of the officers stomped on it saying "hitchhiker from Iraq". 

When we boarded the plane, two of the soldiers sat next to me.  One was from Sherman Oaks. The other lived in the OC, was older and looked Hispanic.  He was the one who squashed the bug.  He said that, by the end of the LAX flight, they would have been traveling non-stop for 28 hours to get home for a 15 day leave over the 4th -- after 8 months in country. 

We got to talking about home and family. He made a comment that there were a lot of "islanders" in Texas.  Turns out he was from Guam.  

The stewardess came around to take the drink orders, and I volunteered to buy them both a beer. The stewardess handed me the beers - compliments of American Airlines - and I took two $50 bills out, wrapped them around the cans and handed one to each soldier.  The stewardess saw this, noticed their gratitude, and comp'd me a glass of wine.

Best $100 glass of wine I ever had.
