03/08/06  Primary Elections have consequence.

Several elections were decided in Tuesday Primary Elections, because only one party had candidates in some races.  Other races were decided because one party picked the wrong person to carry their banner in November, like Rose Renfroe and Craig Watkins, who will be easily defeated.

The biggest loss to the Democrats Tuesday night was former Councilwoman Rose Renfro defeating Attorney Scott Chase by 30 VOTES to be the Democrats' nominee for Dallas County Commissioner and oppose incumbent Commissioner Ken Mayfield.  Scott Chase is one of the most decent people I have ever met in all my years in politics.   For him to lose to Rose Renfro is flat out wrong.  Scott would have been a real challenge to Ken Mayfield.  Renfro has so much baggage from her days on the council, Mayfield will eat her for lunch.  Scott Chase was endorsed by The Dallas Managed News.     03/08/06  David W. Tuthill:
Like Santa Clause, I checked the front section of the DMN not once, not twice but thrice looking for the results of the 4 Republican Primary non-binding referendums.  Where were they?  I sure could not find them.  I had to call my state representative's office to find out that all four passed.
Could it be that the results on property tax caps (which the News came out against) passed?
The eminent domain issue passed, too.  I am sure certain Arlington residents would have loved that one in light of their new stadium plans!  Where were the results in the paper?  I would not want to deprive the Republican party of owning up to the stance their electorate took.

I agreed on three of them , but did not vote for the photo id as it seemed very mean spirited.
Bring on property tax relief and appraisal caps!

The biggest upset was former Councilwoman Barbara Mallory Caraway defeating incumbent State Rep Jesse Jones for House Seat 110 by 68 VOTES.  All the so-called big shots in the African-American community supported Jesse Jones.  The Jones campaign ran radio ads by former Mayor Ron Kirk, State Sen. Royce West, County Commissioner John Wiley Price, et al.  State Rep Yvonne Davis even helped Jones (or not).
We hear Jones supporters delivered turkeys to precinct chairs last Fall and even food to election judges on Tuesday.  All Barbara Mallory did was walk door-to-door with her team of committed campaign VOLUNTEERS, like DallasArena.com contributor Michael Davis.   It was the same team that defeated Old Al Lipscomb when he challenged Councilman James Fantroy last year.  Barbara has no Republican opponent in the Fall. Jesse Jones was endorsed by The Dallas Managed News.

Mike Dupree held on to his District 5 Constable position despite the challenge from Domingo Garcia's man, Jaime Cortes.  Councilwoman Elba Garcia and Councilman Steve Salazar supported Mike Dupree.  Like me, they know how hard Mike has worked for those of us who live in his district.  Since it was really a Domingo Garcia campaign, it was not surprising that early voting (which includes mail-in ballots) went to Cortes, but Mike's supporters were there on election day.  Mike has no Republican opponent in the Fall.

Another big race for me was the Republican race for County DA.  I supported Toby Shook and was thrilled to see him win with such a strong vote, but Judge Vic Cunningham certainly showed great grace and character in his comments after the numbers were in, committing immediately to the effort to get Toby Shook elected in November.  Vic Cunningham was endorsed by The Dallas Managed News.

The Democrats elected bail bondsman Craig Watkins (see Dallas.org's
Fort Worth Documents Prove Watkins Lied on Resume).   Despite recent stories on KTVT-11 and other stations about Watkins' problems paying his taxes and debts, he got 16,472 votes (6,909 more than Larry Jarrett).   Mr. Jarrett would not commit to support Watkins in November, but said he would do whatever the Democratic Party asked of him.  It was a mistake for the Democrats to pick Watkins again.  Larry Jarrett was endorsed by The Dallas Managed News.

It's no secret I vote Republican 98-99% of the time, but I'm devastated that Scott Chase did not win his primary election.  I've never been a big fan of Ken Mayfield and supported a Democrat over him when I lived in his district.  If I lived in his district now, I would walk door-to-door not so much for Mayfield as against Rose Renfroe, who now calls herself "Rosita".  30 votes?  A wonderful man like Scott Chase lost by 30 votes?

Looks like the biggest loser of the night was the Editorial Board of The Dallas Managed News.  This bunch of non-Dallasites are so out of touch with this city and county, they might as well be writing for a paper in Austin or Phoenix.  Oh, that's right, the head gal is from Phoenix.

Future candidates might want to consider closely whether they want an endorsement from Belo.  It looks like it's not such a good thing to be endorsed by
The Dallas Managed News.

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
