02/07/06 Civics 101:
Obey the law!
When you think there's nothing more Joe May and the
rest of the morons on the Dallas Independent School Board (DISD) can do to shock
you, just wait. Apparently, there is a bottomless pit that Joe May can
draw from to come up with stupid ideas. You can't compare May to Forest
Gump, because Forest was harmless and kind. Joe May is dangerous and mean.
It was a terrible day for Dallas school children when Joe May beat Mike Martinez
by 25 VOTES, that came from collected mail-in ballots. Now, every day is
terrible for Dallas school children so long as Joe May is on the School Board
pushing through moronic and illegal propositions like HIRING ILLEGAL
IMMIGRANTS TO TEACH IN DISD SCHOOLS.
It just does not get more ridiculous.

DISD to discuss hiring illegal immigrants;
Hurdle in using these bilingual teachers: U.S. law prohibits it
Monday, February
6, 2006 By
TAWNELL D. HOBBS / The Dallas Morning News |
Dallas' school district has a
shortage of bilingual teachers.
DISD trustee Joe May knows where he
can find a lot of people who speak Spanish fluently and are already in the
country. And he'd like to put them to work.
But there's at least one big hurdle:
The school district cannot knowingly hire illegal
immigrants because it's against federal law.
Mr. May wants to amend that so the
district can hire illegal immigrants who are college-educated and can
qualify for the district's emergency teaching certification program.
The issue will be discussed at the school board's policy briefing today.
... "We're paying for DISD people to go over" to
other countries to recruit bilingual teachers, Mr. May said. "It makes sense
if we set up shop over here. We can build an employment base in our own
market."
... "I'm open to listening to the legal points
they might make," trustee Hollis Brashear said. "But I don't know if we can
discuss something that involves not complying with U.S. law."
Trustee Jerome Garza said it's an
interesting topic that should be discussed. ...
"We have to be innovative."
For Mr. May, no
idea is too far-fetched. Last year, he successfully pushed a
proposal, initially greeted with considerable skepticism, that requires some
principals to become bilingual. The issue divided blacks and Hispanics and
received nationwide attention.
DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa
said Mr. May's kind of grass-roots effort is how laws are changed. He said
the hiring proposal is something he could support as long as it's done
legally.
... But the proposal may become, even briefly, a
lightning rod for the national debate over illegal immigration.
... "It's illegal to
knowingly hire or continue to employ illegal aliens," said Carl
Rusnok, regional communications director for U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement. "Unless you're in this country legally, it's illegal for you to
work."
Under federal law, employers who
knowingly hire unauthorized workers face criminal prosecution and
substantial fines.
... But getting a work visa isn't an option for
illegal immigrants already here, said Maria Elena Garcia-Upson, regional
communications manager for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
... John Keeley, director of communications for
the Center for Immigration Studies, a nonprofit group that seeks to have
fewer immigrants in the U.S., said Mr. May's proposal
sends the wrong message to students.
"Within the education community, you
expect a higher degree for the rule of the law," he said.
... Mr. May believes it's time to change laws to
address illegal immigrants who have been in the U.S. for years.
"They're basically American people
when you get down to it," he said. |
Where is Dr. Edwin Flores in
all this? He was at a North Dallas crime watch meeting last night and
mentioned that he's a former Dallas County prosecutor. You would think he
would have stepped up and spoke out against the idea of a criminal teaching our
children how to be law abiding citizens.
Joe May is an obscure (not obscure enough) school board member who is advocating
disobeying federal law. It's not surprising that May would advocate
changing a federal law to allow people who knowingly have broken our laws and
continue to violate those laws by remaining here illegally -- rather than
following the rules.
Joe May has a real problem following rules, but that's for another issue.
You expect someone like Joe May to disregard laws, federal or local, but Jerome
Garza to support the DISD violating U.S. law is astounding. Guess Our
Downtown Betters (the ODB) made another mistake in him.
MIKE PERRY:
This is the most stupid idea I have ever heard, but coming from Joe
May I am not surprised. Under his philosophy,
we should open the borders to anyone from any country wanting to come to the
USA illegally.
This is another example of lunatics wanting to
circumvent the law.
I wonder if he would feel this way if illegal Middle Easterners were
teaching the children at DISD.
It seems elected officials have for the most part completely lost
touch with reality. |

Bob Smith:
Is Joe May really that stupid? Why is it that public officials in
this city think that they do not have to obey the law?
First,
the Dallas City Council barely decided to enforce State law and now DISD
considers flaunting Federal law.
As someone who follows the law (I have auto
insurance and am impatiently waiting for my wife and step-daughter to get
their visas, which is now 10 months and counting), I'm shocked and offended
by May's suggestion.
Here is the message our elected community leaders
have sent out: The law doesn't have to be followed if it is not in your
interest.
BTW: My Chinese wife (and NO, she is not the type
of woman that would marry a Dallas official, thank
you) could teach Chinese at DISD. Perhaps
Joe May would help smuggle her and daughter here?.
Naw! |

That's the most amazing thing
about what Joe May is proposing. He wants lawbreakers to teach our
children. How are they going to tell the children to behave and follow
classroom rules, when they refuse to follow our basic rules of immigration.
How have we come to the point in Dallas where we have the likes of Joe May on
our school board?
How have we come to the point in Dallas where elected officials advocating
violating federal law? |

Ralph Goin:
To call him stupid is an insult to stupid
people.
There is a simple answer to this problem that the
DISD Board will NEVER think of it! We have to
immediately cease bilingual education and revert to what worked when I was
in school (1942-54) and direct the savings to the classroom!
English emersion workedd
for most of our history and will work again! We can immediately cancel the
program requiring DISD principals learn English
and direct the savings to the classroom! We can stop the expense of going
out of the country to recruit teachers and direct the savings to the
classroom! We can forget hiring teachers who must
know Spanish and direct the savings to the classroom!
I
won't even charge the DISD for this solution, but
there is no way they have the guts to do this! Ask anyone who learned
English this way, and they will tell you how
grateful they are that they aren't in school today! |
|
You know, there's a lesson here. If you have someone who will knowingly
violate long standing election laws, you can't expect him to respect any law,
local, state or federal. Common law and tradition mean even less to a man
who disrespects codified law.
