01/10/06  Board Members Serving Illegally

CBS 11 Exclusive - DALLAS

Thousands of dollars in back taxes, speeding tickets, code violations and community service sentences.  These are all charges directly out of the files for 4 city board appointees.  They are people selected by council members to represent various communities throughout Dallas, but we've discovered several owe the city money.

Board Appointees Must: "NOT BE IN ARREARS ON ANY CITY TAXES, WATER SERVICE CHARGES, OR OTHER OBLIGATIONS OWED THE CITY."   Source: City of Dallas Charter

The Dallas City Charter dictates any appointee to a board must, "NOT BE IN ARREARS ON ANY CITY TAXES, WATER SERVICE CHARGES, OR OTHER OBLIGATIONS OWED THE CITY," yet the council has appointed 4 people who are in violation of this rule.

LAURA MILLER, DALLAS MAYOR  We've had some that have had payment plans set up, not paid.  You owe money to the city..you don't serve!

DIANNE BROADUS is MAXINE THORNTON-REESE's appointee to the Martin Luther King Board, deciding how money is spent on the South Dallas Community Center.  She owes the city more than $4 thousand dollars in back property taxes.

TAYLOR BRANDON was appointed to the Board of Adjustment by LEO CHANEY, but he had outstanding speeding tickets and seat belt violations that have netted him fines and 60 days of community service that he still hasn't served.

JAMES FANTROY, DALLAS CITY COUNCIL He ought to live by example..set example by doing it ourselves.

BENNY GABRIEL is JAMES FANTROY's appointee to the Board of Adjustment where he will mediate neighborhood issues.  He has racked up a $900 bill with the City for CODE VIOLATIONS at his house.

NICHOLAS DIXIE is BILL BLAYDES' appointee to the Police Review Board.  He also owes about $4,000 in property taxes.

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
