When will the ODB ever
learn? Apparently, NEVER!
Texas is home to the BIGGEST and WORST business disasters in American history.
Enron, the I-30 Condo fiasco, the savings and
loan bust, etc.
The Cowboys' management is positioning itself to
become the most prominent sports franchise to ever go bust. Then,
they will look to the City of Arlington to bail them out! Good luck on that
one. Let's
see -- price your most loyal fans OUT of the seats --
yeah, that's a good idea! The ticket prices
are just the tip of the iceberg as far as Arlington's being left holding
the bag. Not only will the new stadium never
sell out, it won't even begin to make the return on investment that was promised
to the taxpayers. Not to mention what
will happen if the Cowboys have a couple of flat or
losing seasons in a row or the inevitable "player
scandals" that will no doubt tarnish their bottom
line.
Take a look at American Airlines. They have their
name on two arenas (Miami and Dallas) and just posted their first positive
earnings quarter in six years (and note that the earnings were just barely in
the positive). The likes of Enron, World com,
etc. try to seduce the government sector into thinking the private sector knows
what they are doing -- who are they kidding! They are flying by the seat of
their pants.
After all of those corporate morons ship all of the good paying jobs overseas,
who will be left to buy even the cheap seats at any body's sports facilities --
let alone pay a $4.00 toll to get there and back?
I wish Arlington all the luck in the world, and
they will surely need it. I
am so happy THEY got stuck with that stadium and not Dallas. It's
too bad that the average fan is not the voter who has to pay for this "pig in a
poke".
I predict that the toll way project
to Jones stadium will end up being even worse than Boston's "Big Dig"
fiasco. Leave it to Texas to want to be more horrible than any other place in
the US when it comes to making bad decisions. The SH 161
toll way project is a thin disguise for
"imagined" lucrative construction contracts. After expensive engineering and
designs that will prove to be fraught with flaws, omissions, and errors; cost
overruns and change orders that will balloon out of proportion; and delays that
will extend into the retirements of "our" grand kids, MAYBE we will see
something. But, probably not.
It will be interesting to see how long the NTTA can afford to carry the Trinity
Tollway along with all the other new toll facilities that are not cash flowing.
As a taxpayer, I sure won't support any bailout of their mismanagement!
Studies show the MAJORITY of sports venues financed by tax dollars LOSE money
and never deliver on the development promises made by the team owners.
Of the latest 50 stadia/arenas built in the US,
only about 10% are generating revenues anywhere near what they projected when
they were pitched to the voters. The real irony is that once they are supposed
to start paying their fair share of taxes, the sports franchises have either
moved or folded, so the cities and counties who voted them into existence are
STUCK holding the bag. Not so funny, huh!
Just look at how many names
the arena in Houston has had in the past 15 years. Now,
it is
home to Joel Ostein's church. God help us!
Maybe Joel Ostein will buy Reunion Arena and every other washed up, money
losing, public/private joint venture, leaky roofed facility and save us the
maintenance. Oh yeah -- as a church, they pay no property taxes!
Irving is considering several options for what it will
do with a washed up and worn out stadium stuck in the middle of a traffic
nightmare, and most include demolishing Texas Stadium.
Of course, Irving will look to government to
bail them out in the form of TxDOT buying some of the land
to un-snag the traffic knots this white elephant has
perpetrated on
the Metroplex for the past 30 years!
Dallas lucked out by not getting the Cowboys stadium on our backs!
