04/04/07  DISD Credit Card Scandal

The Dallas Morning New's "Hits & Misses" this week hit the nail on the head with their commentary on the DISD credit card scandal.

Hits and Misses: Low-guilt meat, Super Bowl bid; One down in DISD credit card scandal

So was it the queen-size therapeutic mattress pad? The deodorant, laundry soap, body wash and feminine hygiene products? The leather jackets, purses and dozens of vases seized from her home? Whatever it was, we're glad something convinced a federal jury that Marsha Ollison of The Colony misused her DISD credit card on items that might not have had, shall we say, direct educational purposes. That jury found her guilty Wednesday of three counts of felony theft for about $56,000 in improper charges from 2003 to 2006. Ms. Ollison, 43, a secretary in the superintendent's office, could get 30 years in prison and is the first of what we hope will be a number of DISD employees paying a criminal price, at long last, for stealing from kids' futures.

Public sentiment towards fraudulent expenditures of financial resources meant to directly benefit the education of DISD school children appears to have reached a level where a majority of DISD stakeholders support complete transparency, accountability and adherence to the rule of law for every DISD employee found guilty of committing fraud of their DISD issued credit card.

Thus far, criminal and judicial accountability for those connected to this scandal has come down mostly on DISD support staff.  The District's attempt to use forced resignations of two high school principals has hit a snag and caused concern from DISD Black leadership as to why DISD Hispanic and White administrators have yet to be held accountable in a similar manner.

DISD taxpayers are paying the salaries of these two principals to stay home until this mess is resolved.

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
