01/31/07 Fine Arts Now in Oak Cliff
(make that SOB art).
Who knew? Apparently,
a LOT of folks since it was approved over two years ago. I got a frantic
last-minute call to attend a meeting at one of our
big Baptist churches. There were the usual
neighborhood activists and church leaders in
attendance, but there was
also an "unusual" collection of former and current elected and appointed
officials, along with Deputy Chief Rick Watson.
The long and short of
the meeting is that the SOB ordinance is full of loop holes FAVORING
the SOB's and the early notification system that was supposed to be in place
was not used by the building officials or the police.
Since no zoning change was needed, it may be why
there was no early notice. According to the City staff, the
application meets all of the SOB requirements.
The location is on South Westmoreland Road across from the
City's waste transfer station. Imagine the
irony of this. It is also less than 10
blocks from Ed Oakley's house.
I am pretty sure that New Fine Arts is just testing the
waters. I do not see a market for a porn video shop here in Oak Cliff --
especially at this location.
Planned pickets and protests aside, this place will be belly
up in less than a year because I just don't see the typical porn seeker
coming into Oak Cliff for their "fix". This is
one instance where the negative image of Oak Cliff might
work in our favor.
