11/02/08  Failure of Leadership at the DISD?
Gherig Salda?

Sitting through the last DISD Board meeting and witnessing the volume of ill will that has been generated by this Superintendent and this Board among key stakeholders (those who are not a part of the elite business community), I couldn't help but think I was witnessing the failure of leadership.

Unless the Superintendent and Board move quickly to restore confidence in their leadership, I don't see how the Dr. Hinojosa can remain in his position.  Nothing he or the Board have done thus far has helped rebuild any confidence in their leadership.

Through a narrow margin, the Board passed the facade of an "ethics" code with its "Jack Lowe clause".  Instead of putting taxpayers' interest primary in this issue, they put the interests of one individual, Jack Lowe, front and center.  School Board President Lowe is more important to the Board than thousands of DISD taxpayers.

They have not addressed, to the public's satisfaction, how the Superintendent has put the DISD in financial crisis.

They have not addressed, to the public's satisfaction, what they will do differently from this point forward to assure they are providing the necessary oversight that will result in solid fiscal soundness.

They remain callous to the calls from parents and teachers for responsiveness to their concerns.  They only listen to the business elite, the business elite who have very few of their own children enrolled in the DISD.  If they continue in this manner, how can they rebuild trust and confidence in their leadership?  If they continue in this manner, anger and distrust will only grow.  The tension on exhibit at the last Board meeting will continue to mount.

It will take n
othing less than positive, decisive action on the part of the DISD leadership to strongly demonstrate that they "get it."   They must pay heed not only to the business elites, but to the majority of stakeholders in the DISD.  That is what will begin to turn this ship around.

Either they move quickly to restore trust and confidence, or the sounds of dissension and dissatisfaction will become deafening! Their action at their last meeting certainly failed that test of leadership.

Those who voted for the meaningless "ethics" code get an "F" for leadership!

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
