Why I don't support DISD's bond package!
In the last
DISD bond package, we spent money to build new schools
in Vickery Meadow that are already under-populated.
There is a giant push over there to get rid of all the old
apartments, which will displace thousands of kids. So, until DISD and the
City's Long-Range Planning Department can get together and talk seriously about
our City's future, I won't support throwing more good money after bad at DISD.
| Which brings me to my second point.
The DISD operates independently of City Hall. Some of the more
cynical types out there (me among them) view this as a good thing,
because we all know how well City Hall manages.
However, we know that the #1
reason for middle-income families, regardless
of race, fleeing to the suburbs is due to the
poor quality of education at DISD. So,
why is it an autonomous entity? If we had more middle income families
living in Dallas, then we'd have more property tax, more money, etc.

Isn't it illegal to have campaign signs on school property?
I have noticed several signs supporting the upcoming bond election
on the grounds of the local grade school.

It's not
the DISD's job to stimulate economic prosperity in
Dallas.
It's the DISD's job to educate students in
Dallas. By the looks of it, people don't seem to
think the DISD can manage to do
that very well.
Michael Hinojosa: What a huge disappointment
this guy has turned out to be. I don't even know where to start with him.
Scape-goating with the whole P-Card scandal
will end up costing the taxpayers more than was misappropriated in the first
place. This is guy is the quintessential bureaucrat who absolutely refuses to
take any responsibility for anything. When a
scandal breaks, he just creates new levels of
"management".
We need leaders in the DISD, not managers.
Simply "managing" a system that's falling apart is something that
Economics 101 tells us is
stupid. Look at what's happened with Ford and GM.
They are finally starting to realize that managing those companies when
they were drowning in debt wasn't working. It's
the same thing with DISD, and we should really try to operate it more like a
successful business.
We need a business leader at the top. Hinojosa knows ZERO about business,
but the Board of Trustees voted to extend his contract!
Finally, can we please get some real people to serve
on the Board of Trustees? What are these people thinking? They act like the
DISD's money is their own personal money, and their districts are their own
fiefdoms. I am so sick to death of the DISD Board of Trustees, I don't even
want to talk about them anymore.
No, I don't want to give a broken entity that operates
in a 1960's era vacuum more money to spend poorly.
If the DISD were an employee, with its terrible
performance record, inability to communicate effectively with co-workers, over
budget in all departments, product is falling apart (DISD drop-out rate),
would anyone be in favor of
giving this employee a raise?
