It is ironic
that Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins held a press
conference related to documents involving the John F. Kennedy assassination
on the same day a Dallas Morning News
editorial,
Is This 'Smart on Crime'? Silence on Shaw case only leads
to questions (DallasNews.com,
2/18/8),
brings to light public concern over
DA Watkins' handling of criminal
charges his office filed against former DART Board
Chair Lynn Flint Shaw.
The DMN editorial
discusses a so-called memorandum
agreement, which
makes a mockery of DA Watkins' "Smart on Crime" mantra.
DA Watkins' claim of
running an open administration, breaking from the past with nothing to
hide, contradicts his
selective, double-standard kid gloves treatment of Mrs. Shaw's criminal
charge. DA Watkins' decision to charge Mrs. Shaw
with a Class A misdemeanor instead of a felony more suited to Mrs. Shaw's
alleged deed along with recent disclosure of existence of an
imminent memo
agreement between
Mrs. Shaw and the DA's office for all intent and
purpose, leaves justice at the back door of DA
Watkins' office.
If the
memo agreement
between DA
Watkins' office and Mrs. Shaw becomes fact, what
precedent will be established for similar criminal charges filed by
DA Watkins' office?
This case should have been transferred to another jurisdiction.
DA Watkins' decision not
to transfer jurisdiction of Mrs. Shaw's criminal charges has placed
him and his office in a position where he could possibly become a potential
witness or complainant.
Couple that with news leaks
exposing this
memo
agreement
from most certainly someone
within his department who does not agree with
DA Watkins' selective, double-standard approach he
is taking with regard to
Mrs. Shaw's unfortunate predicament.
If this is "Smart on Crime", then the most suitable mantra for DA Watkins' office should be "Dallas County District Attorney's Office, where selective, double-standard prosecution depends on who you know and what you look like."
