  Don't worry,
there's no money to ruin White Rock Lake Park.

Councilman Sheffie Kadane convened a Task Force to study lighting in White Rock Lake Park.  The Lighting Task Force held its fourth and final meeting on February 12th.  Below is an example of the indifference we are experiencing from City Hall and our council representative, in particular:

I?ve lived in Lakewood since 1950.

Putting lights on West Lawther Drive will destroy our beautiful lake, not only at night, but during the day when one can see those ugly standards spaced every few feet. I?m shocked that the City of Dallas has so much extra money that they can frivolously spend that kind of money.  However, I am glad to hear that there are no other projects in the city of Dallas that need funding.  No need to put the downtown hotel on the referendum in May. There?s tons of money to be wasted in Dallas!!

Thank you for your email and comments. I need to let you know we do not have funds for trail lighting. The funds for the parking lots came from the 2006 bonds. Thank you again.

The consultants to the Parks Department presented the plan that they want to take to the Park Board The majority of the Task Force disapproved of the main feature of the plan - 600 new light poles around the lake, plus an additional 300 light poles in the parking lots around the lake.

This massive lighting would effectively ruin the night time ambience of the lake.  This appears to be an attempt to sell the City hundreds of lights that the park does not need.

Without any requests from the Task Force, the consultants proposed to put pole lights on all 10 miles of trail around the lake.

Voting against 600 light poles on 10 miles of trails were the following:

White Rock Neighborhood Association

Peninsula Neighborhood Association

For the Love of the Lake

Corinthian Sailing Club

White Rock Boat House

Greater Dallas Bicycle Club

No stake-holder association present at the meeting voted in favor of the proposal.

The Task Force recommended the new light poles on West Lawther be removed and no new poles added to the shoreline.

The plan is scheduled to be presented to the Park Board on March 5th.

We encourage you to contact Park Board Member Darren Boruff (dboruff@reddyice.com) and Councilman Sheffield Kadane (sheffield.kadane@dallascityhall.com).  Ask them to remove the West Lawther lights and install no more lights on West Lawther.  We want no new light poles on the nature trail, no new light poles along the shoreline.

Keep White Rock natural.

Ward politics is the Devil's key to the soul of the city council.  It is how some council members got themselves in trouble in the past.  It is the bait that will get others in trouble in the future. 4/6/8
